Serving It Right Policy
2009


The Summerland Yacht Club supports the Government of BC Serving It Right
Policy and has empowered the staff and any sitting member of the Executive to
implement the following steps in case of a member or guest who is “apparently
intoxicated”.

Listed below, but not limited to, may be some of the signs used to determine that a
member/guest is “apparently intoxicated”.

•    Deterioration of fine motor control ( hand to eye coordination
•    Deterioration of gross motor control (standing, walking etc.)
•    Change of speech volume or pace
•    Slurred speech
•    Red Eyes
•    Sweating
•    Decreased alertness
•    Slow or shallow respiration
•    Sleepiness
•    Sharp emotional changes, sudden anger/ crying.

Serving it Right Policy- Alcoholic Beverages


Staff and any sitting member of the Executive are empowered to:

a) Request a member’s or guest’s car keys. Member signing in guest should assist
when dealing with intoxicated guest.
b) Refuse to serve alcohol if they believe they must trust their own judgment to try
to reduce the member’s/guest’s consumption.
c) Call a cab and charge it to the club. The cost of the cab will be charged to the
member’s/ guest’s tab for the evening.
d) If a member/ guest ignores points a, b, c, and proceeds to get into any motor
vehicle to drive the employee or member of the executive is required to call 911
and report the incident to the authorities.
e) Reciprocal Guests or members staying aboard their boat are to surrender their key
and be escorted to their boat.

No sanction will be brought against any Club employee or executive member who
proceeds through the steps listed above, implements this policy.

•    Members who drive after being advised by staff or executive member that they
should not drive or who attempt to intimidate or coerce the staff or executive
•    Members in any way from implementing this policy, against themselves or another member or guest, will be subject to such sanctions as the executive may deem to be appropriate
